Overview: CLS Coupé petrol engines

The CLS Coupé is very efficient thanks to its new 6- and 8-cylinder petrol engines of the BlueDIRECT engine family. Thanks to innovative engine technologies such as direct petrol injection as well as fast, precisely operating injectors it has been possible to achieve a considerable reduction in fuel consumption and lower emissions compared with the engines in the preceding model.

6-cylinder petrol engine The new BlueDIRECT V6 engine that powers the CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY was developed using lightweight materials consistently. It features spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors, four valves per cylinder and adjustable intake and exhaust camshafts. Comprehensive conservation of resources: In addition, the energy efficiency of the ancillary equipment has been improved. The CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY saves fuel, reduces CO2 emissions and increases smooth running characteristics. The CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY also features the ECO start/stop function: it reduces the vehicle’s fuel consumption and emissions by switching off the engine when the vehicle is at a standstill.
8-cylinder petrol engine The innovative BlueDIRECT V8 engine stands for effortless superiority in every driving situation. The engines from the new BlueDIRECT engine family, powering the CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY and the CLS 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY, feature reduced consumption and correspondingly lower emissions compared with the predecessor engine. Lightweight materials are consistently used throughout, in addition to which the displacement has been reduced (downsizing), enabling consumption and emissions to be reduced by more than 20 percent compared with the preceding model. The BlueDIRECT V-8 engine generation also impresses with a wealth of technological highlights such as petrol direct injection, two compact turbochargers for swift response and intercooling for optimised thermodynamic efficiency. The CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY and the CLS 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY with BlueDIRECT engine deliver an output of 300 kW, reaching a maximum torque of 600 Nm. With the integrated ECO stop/start system you save fuel at the traffic lights and in traffic jams. The function detects when the engine is not needed, and automatically switches it off.
V8 biturbo petrol engines The CLS 63 AMG is powered by a 5.5-litre AMG V8 biturbo engine that delivers 386 kW and attains a maximum torque of 700 Newton metres. Innovative components: The unique combination of high-tech systems, such as direct petrol injection, twin turbochargers, kinetic energy recuperation when braking and coasting, and the Controlled Efficiency drive program with stop/start function, all ensures a top-rate performance with minimum fuel consumption levels. Motorsport-level performance: In conjunction with the AMG Performance Package, the performance figures increase to 410 kW and 800 Nm. Torque characteristics demonstrate that no other engine in this output class achieves the figures delivered by the AMG biturbo.
