

The majority of accidents start long before the actual collision: with a lapse in concentration, poor visibility or hazards which cannot be anticipated. We have therefore fitted the new E-Class Coupé with a range of safety features which promote relaxed motoring and help you to bring critical situations under control.
The optional DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control system uses short and long-range sensors to maintain the desired distance from the vehicle ahead. The system is active at speeds of between 0 and 200 km/h and is also helpful in city traffic or stop-and-go traffic as the sensors can operate between 0.2 and 200 metres. Should a vehicle ahead brake quickly or the Coupé approach an obstacle, the PRE-SAFE® brake can initiate partial braking. The system is backed up by the DISTRONIC PLUS radar sensors, which can identify a potential collision. BAS PLUS Brake Assist can also support driver braking according to the current scenario.

If the driver appears to be falling asleep momentarily at the wheel, the ATTENTION ASSIST system suggests taking a break. It monitors the driver’s behaviour – primarily using a special steering angle sensor on the steering column. If the profile deviates from the previously measurement, visual and audible warnings can be issued.

The system can identify the speed limits shown on road signs and display the permitted maximum speed in the instrument cluster. This is particularly useful on stretches of road with frequently changing traffic signs or along routes with road works. Speed Limit Assist also aligns the displayed speed limits with the data stored in the navigation system.

The light package incorporates the Intelligent Light System, which improves visibility in dark conditions by adjusting its bi-xenon headlamps to the current driving situation. Illumination is wider on a country road, for example, while on motorways the range is increased significantly. The system also features enhanced fog lamps as well as active light and cornering light functions, LED daytime driving lamps and adaptive Highbeam Assist. This helps you to detect pedestrians, cyclists or other obstacles earlier than with conventional low-beam headlamps. The system reduces glare for other road users and optimises road illumination. A camera is used to control headlamp range adjustment and the main beams in such a way that the road receives optimum illumination in line with the current driving scenario and the road users ahead. The main beams are automatically switched on if no other road users are detected. This ensures that abrupt changes in light intensity are avoided and replaced instead by gentle transitions.
