The E-Class Estate with its new-generation 4-cylinder engines is particularly efficient. The development theme – higher performance and lower consumption – has been continued undeterred and, thanks to the BlueEFFICIENCY concept, it has been possible to reduce fuel consumption by more than 20 per cent compared with the previous models.
The exhaust-gas turbocharger has significantly increased the efficiency of the 4-cylinder petrol engines. The two optimised 1.8 litre Otto engines with direct petrol injection and variable valve timing burn fuel particularly efficiently – and, thanks to factors including homogeneous direct injection and increased compression, display a higher output potential than previous models.
They comply with stringent limits regarding consumption and emissions (EU5) but continue to deliver peak torque, outstanding performance, excellent noise levels and, thanks to two balance shafts, smooth operation. The E 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY, for instance, delivers 135 kW and develops a maximum torque of 270 Nm. The E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY boasts an output of 150 kW and 310 Nm maximum torque.

The E 350 4MATIC[4] is available as an AWD variant. The engine is equipped with port injection and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive. It delivers 200 kW of power and achieves a maximum torque rating of 350 Nm at 2400 to 5000 rpm.
The 3.5 litre V6 engine in the E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY complies with the EU5 exhaust emissions standard. Features of this engine include direct injection and four-valve technology. The energy efficiency of the auxiliary units has been improved. The new radiator blind optimises the vehicle's aerodynamics, and the fuel pump, ECO power steering pump and air-conditioning compressor now operate in line with driver requirements.
The rated torque of the E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY is 365 Nm and its output is 215 kW. This engine combines smooth operation and efficiency with the highest level of agility and handling dynamism. The 6-cylinder engine accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.0 seconds.
(E 350 4MATIC: fuel consumption combined: 10.2–10.3 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 238–241; E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY: fuel consumption combined: 8.6-8.9 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 200–208 g/km)[2]
Concentrated power is packed into the V8-cylinder port-injection engine of the E 500. It complies with EU5 emissions standard and delivers a powerful 285 kW and maximum torque rating of 530 Nm. The E 500 accelerates within 5.4 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h.
The E 63 AMG boasts the most powerful V8 engine. It is a thoroughbred sports engine, which delivers outstanding performance thanks to a high-speed concept and naturally aspirated engine design. It accelerates the new E-Class Estate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds – that just about says it all.
(E 500: fuel consumption combined: 11.1-11.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 258-260 g/km; E 63 AMG: fuel consumption combined: 12.8 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 299 g/km)[2]
