BlueEFFICIENCY measures

BlueEFFICIENCY measures are comprehensive vehicle optimisations that help to save fuel and ease the burden on the environment. The CLS Coupé combines the most efficient engines with sophisticated aerodynamic features and energy management measures to keep fuel consumption to a minimum.

ECO start/stop function The ECO start/stop function reduces fuel consumption and emissions by automatically switching off the engine when the vehicle is at a standstill (for example when in a traffic jam or at traffic lights). Vehicles equipped with the ECO start/stop function possess a starter/generator in place of the starter. Intelligent control electronics allow the starter/generator to supply the electrical energy for the vehicle's electrical system and, in starter mode, the torque required to start the engine. The ECO start/stop function can be deactivated manually using a switch and is switched off automatically when certain criteria are not fulfilled, such as for instance engine temperature, outside temperature, climate control in load operation (networked with climate control system).
Driver information for optimised consumption Apart from vehicle optimisation measures, the driver, too, can make a significant contribution to efficient driving: with the help of ECO training courses such as those offered by Mercedes-Benz, fuel savings of up to 15 percent can be achieved. In addition, the CLS Shooting Brake features information systems with which the driving style can be adapted even better. The standard ECO display in the instrument cluster prompts the driver to adopt a fuel-economy-enhancing style of driving. Optionally, the COMAND Online multi-media systems can generate a consumption history and show it as a bar diagram.
Intelligent energy management Significant savings can also come from a series of small contributions. With the aim of reducing the fuel consumption of the CLS Shooting Brake, the Mercedes-Benz engineers examined all the main components with regard to their energy usage and found ways of getting them to work more economically. Overview of efficient energy management measures: Efficient alternator management: the kinetic energy when braking and in overrun mode is used to charge the battery. More efficient fuel management: the pumping pressure of the fuel pump is based on the precise amount of fuel needed at the time. Air conditioning only as required: if not required, the compressor is automatically decoupled from the engine’s belt drive.

Efficiency technologies in the CLS Shooting Brake.

The latest-generation CDI diesel engines combine irresistible performance characteristics with low consumption. Injection pressure has been increased, smoothness of operation enhanced and noise levels optimised – while reduced compression makes for lower emission levels.

Direct injection, increased compression and a new air and exhaust system for the new BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 petrol engine generations deliver outstanding torque, output and noise reduction figures. Innovative engine technology ensures low emissions and fuel consumption.
