Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon: All-wheel drive

Always ready

4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system provides for powerful moving off and acceleration – even on poor road surfaces and in adverse weather conditions. The 4MATIC system is always active and does not require any reaction time to spontaneously engage.

  • Enormously powerful: The 4ETS Electronic Traction System makes conventional differential locks superfluous because the automatic brake impulses improve moving off on slippery surfaces and increase stability during demanding manoeuvres.
  • Low weight: Thanks to the compact design, the intelligent choice of materials and the high level of efficiency, the weight is barely higher than that of similar models with rear-wheel drive.
  • Supporting systems: The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system is supported by the sensors of the ESP® Electronic Stability Program as well as the 4ETS Electronic Traction System. Spinning wheels are braked systematically and the drive torque is automatically distributed to the wheels with sufficient traction.
  • AMG models: The performance-oriented 4MATIC all-wheel drive system developed by Mercedes-AMG for the E 63 AMG offers a combination of the best possible traction and the neutral handling characteristics typical of AMG. A planetary centre differential with a torque distribution ratio biased towards the rear axle of 33 : 67 as well as a light pre-lock effect. Depending on the ESP® stage chosen, wheel-specific braking interventions (Torque Vectoring) and engine management adjustments counteract the initial understeer tendency typical of all-wheel drive systems.The result is an agile and at the same time comfortable cornering of the vehicle towards the centre of the bend.
