BlueEFFICIENCY measures

BlueEFFICIENCY measures are comprehensive vehicle optimisations that help to save fuel and ease the burden on the environment. In the new E-Class Coupé, too, the most efficient engines are matched with the optimum aerodynamics and energy management measures, to keep fuel consumption to a minimum.

Aerodynamics Exterior mirrors designed for aerodynamic efficiency and demand-driven shutters on the inside of the radiator shroud (4- and 6-cylinder models except E 350 BlueTEC) improve the aerodynamics and thus optimise fuel consumption. Close
ECO display The ECO display in the instrument cluster provides information on the efficiency of the driver's style as a way to motivate the driver to reduce consumption by adapting a more fuel-efficient driving style.
ECO start/stop function The ECO start/stop function reduces fuel consumption and emissions by switching off the engine automatically when the car comes to a stop (e.g. in traffic jams or at traffic lights). Vehicles equipped with the ECO start/stop function possess a starter/generator in place of the starter. Intelligent control electronics allow the starter/generator to supply the electrical energy for the vehicle's electrical system and, in starter mode, the torque required to start the engine. Potential savings: a shift recommendation display - in vehicles with manual transmission - in the instrument cluster prompts the driver to perform early upshifts to save fuel. Configuration options: the ECO start/stop function can be deactivated manually and is switched off automatically, for example, when the interior temperature falls below a specified value (networked with climate control system)
Intelligent energy management Significant savings can also come from a series of small contributions. With the aim of making the new E-Class Coupé more fuel efficient, the Mercedes-Benz engineers examined all main components with regard to their energy usage and found ways of getting them to work even more economically. Overview of efficient energy management measures: On-demand control: the electromechanical steering gear of the power steering system reduces energy consumption. Efficient alternator management: kinetic energy is used to recharge the battery during braking and coasting. More efficient fuel management: the pressure of the fuel pump is based on the precise amount of fuel needed at the time. Air conditioning only as required: if not required, the compressor is automatically decoupled from the engine’s belt drive.

Efficiency technologies in the new E-Class Coupé

The latest-generation CDI diesel engines combine irresistible performance characteristics with low fuel consumption. Injection pressure has been increased, operation smoothness enhanced and noise levels optimised, while reduced compression makes for lower emissions.

Direct injection, increased compression and turbocharging in the new petrol engines generate outstanding torque, power output and noise reduction figures. Innovative engine technology has significantly reduced emissions and fuel consumption compared with previous models.

BlueDIRECT engine technology The current BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 engine generation includes measures such as downsizing, petrol direct injection and a turbocharger (E 400 and E 500) for a fast response. Innovative engine technology makes it possible to reduce emissions and fuel consumption further compared with previous models.
BlueTEC catalytic converter technology BlueTEC catalytic converter technology uses the reactant AdBlue® to purify exhaust gases. This makes it possible to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90 per cent. This world's cleanest diesel technology to date already complies with the requirements of the future Euro 6 emissions standards.
