The system is active up to a speed of 250 km/h and provides the necessary braking force if the driver performs an emergency braking manoeuvre. Now for the first time in the new E-Class, the expanded BAS PLUS function also covers crossing objects (Cross-Traffic Assist) and pedestrians (pedestrian protection), something that is particularly relevant in urban traffic and at junctions. Objects crossing the vehicle's path as well as stationary or slowly-moving pedestrians in the active area in front of the vehicle can be detected by the system, the driver can be warned and supported in an emergency braking manoeuvre at speeds of up to 72 km/h.

The PRE-SAFE® brake can help prevent rear-end collisions. The system emits three warning tones to alert the driver if it detects an imminent danger of a rear-end collision. If the driver does not react, the system initiates autonomous partial braking 1.6 seconds before the calculated time of impact, decelerating the vehicle with around 40 percent of maximum braking power (4 m/s2). This provides another prompt for the driver to act. Should the driver also fail to react to this haptic signal, the PRE-SAFE® brake will if necessary trigger an autonomous emergency stop. In the new generation of the E-Class the PRE-SAFE® brake now also acts in conjunction with detected pedestrians.

The extended PRE-SAFE® PLUS function can recognise and initiate safety measures to protect vehicle occupants not only against hazards located in front of the vehicle, it can also react to potential dangers behind the car. PRE-SAFE® PLUS features a radar sensor in the rear bumper that detects objects in imminent danger of collision, and can initiate appropriate preventive measures such as stopping short. This system is complemented by the height-adjustable seat belt buckle extender on the outer rear seats. They facilitate fastening the seat belts and ensure safety-relevant pre-tensioning of the belts in the event that the Pre-Safe® mechanisms are triggered in a dangerous situation.

As soon as a driver selects a setting with the touch of a button, electric controls automatically set the seat, exterior mirrors and steering column back to the previously saved positions. If the PRE-SAFE® system is activated, the front passenger seat can be moved automatically into a more favourable crash position. If the collision is then avoided, the multicontour seats are returned to their initial position once certain critical limit values are undercut.

In conjunction with the active multicontour seat option, the PRE-SAFE® positioning function can become active in the event of danger.If the system detects a critical situation, the side bolsters of cushion and backrest are inflated, providing lateral support for driver and passenger.

The multicontour seats take pressure off the spine and can be precisely adjusted to the ergonomic characteristics of the driver and the front passenger. The Parking package helps the driver in tight parking and manoeuvring situations and comes with an innovation: A 360-degree camera system displays the vehicle's surroundings from a bird's-eye perspective on the screen of the COMAND Online multimedia system. Blind Spot Assist helps the driver to avoid potentially critical situations by monitoring the areas to the left and right of the vehicle when changing lanes. If the system detects another vehicle within the monitoring range, a hazard warning triangle lights up in the corresponding exterior mirror.

AIRMATIC provides ride comfort and driving dynamics at the highest level. The air suspension system works in combination with a fully automatic damping adjustment which continually adapts to the driving situation and provides excellent road roar and tyre vibration characteristics even when the road is only slightly bumpy.

The 360-degree camera system displays the vehicle's surroundings from a bird's-eye perspective on the screen of the COMAND Online multimedia system. As all four sides of the vehicle are monitored, it is easier to assess the situation in any manoeuvre.

The system comprises a short-range camera system with four cameras and a control unit, which together can provide a bird's-eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings One camera is fitted in the centre of the radiator grille at the front, one camera is fitted in each of the exterior mirrors and one camera is fitted in the centre of the boot lidThe 'virtual viewpoint' created by the camera images covers an area of about three metres in front of the vehicle and behind. Active Parking Assist makes a major contribution to safe and comfortable driving. It helps the driver find a suitable parking space to park lengthways or sideways and helps the driver to enter into, and exit from, the parking space by active steering intervention. The integrated PARKTRONIC warns drivers if there are obstacles in front of the car or behind it.

The driver starts the parking manoeuvring process by stopping ahead of the indicated parking space, selecting reverse and confirming the prompt which appears in the instrument cluster. Active Parking Assist takes steering into the parking space by means of steering motors (at speeds of up to 10 km/h). The driver only operates the accelerator and the brake pedal.

The automatic child seat recognition can recognise special transponders in the special child seat models from the Mercedes-Benz accessories range and automatically deactivates the front-passenger airbag. An indicator lamp lights up to confirm that the airbag has been deactivated. The belt tensioner and all other airbags on the front-passenger side – such as the sidebag, pelvisbag or windowbag – remain active in order to protect the child. The front-passenger airbag is reactivated automatically after the child seat has been removed.

The tyre pressure monitoring system boosts safety by alerting the driver to critical drops in tyre pressure. The wheel electronics system continuously transmits tyre pressures and temperature data to the vehicle’s control unit. If the system identifies a variance, it warns the driver through a signal in the instrument cluster.

The reversing camera offers convenience and added safety. Integrated in the vehicle rear, the camera transmits an image of the area behind the vehicle to the (optional) central COMAND Online multimedia system. The camera image not only makes parking easier but also aids in manoeuvring on terrain with visibility restrictions.

New optics with digital image transmission and additional electronic zoom functions ensure an optimum image for all driving situations. When manoeuvring, the driver can select the "back-in" mode, in which dynamic guidance lines indicate the corresponding path of the vehicle.

If the vehicle is fitted with a trailer coupling, a further mode is made available. Firstly, in "Back-In" mode a guidance line showing the vehicle centre axis helps the driver align the centre of the car with the drawbar. Once the vehicle is close to the trailer drawbar, Zoom mode makes it possible to approach the drawbar with absolute precision. The driver is helped by a dynamic guidance line that shows the path of the trailer coupling for every steering angle.

Lane Keeping Assist can detect a traffic lane based on the road markings and, if the car is about to leave its lane unintentionally, warn the driver by making the steering wheel vibrate gently. If the indicator is operated beforehand or the steering wheel is consciously turned, the system assumes that the lane change is intentional and does not emit a warning.

Blind Spot Assist uses two radar sensors in the rear bumper to monitor the blind spot at speeds above 30 km/h and can warn the driver against dangerous lane changes if the system detects another road user in the critical area to the right or left of the vehicle.

This expanded system is based on the existing Speed Limit Assist system. The traffic signs are recognised optically by a camera system installed behind the windscreen.

The functionality of the system has been extended to include, apart from traffic signs as up to the present, "no overtaking" and "no entry" signs as well as the respective signs lifting the restrictions. The traffic signs detected are compared with the traffic signs stored in the system, and displayed if they coincide. Apart from a plausibility check against the signs stored in it, the system also makes use of data from the navigation system.

The TV tuner makes it possible to watch television during driving breaks: The receiver unit processes DVB-T-standard digital signals and is controlled through the COMAND Online multimedia system; the picture is shown in the system's display, which is positioned in the driver’s central field of vision.

KEYLESS-GO is an electronic access and drive authorisation system, which enables the driver to unlock the vehicle and start the engine without having to actually hold the key.

To this effect the access and drive authorisation functions are stored on the electronic key. This system makes it possible to lock the vehicle from the outside and convenience closing/opening.Via the start/stop switch in the ignition lock the engine can be started and stopped.

If the key is in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle and the user grips one of the door handles, the vehicle electronics use the relevant induction aerials (in the doors, fuel flap and bumpers) to communicate with the key. If the code matches the authorisation code, the vehicle is unlocked.

The optional HANDS-FREE ACCESS function makes loading and unloading the boot easier, by opening or closing the boot lid automatically when a sensor detects that the key is near the vehicle and the driver has placed his foot under the rear of the car.The sensor registers the presence of the driver's foot. The sensor emits the signal required to open the boot lid. The vehicle can be loaded and unloaded without even having to touch the car or the key.

The panoramic sliding sunroof consists of a fixed panoramic glass roof and an electrically operated glass sunroof that slides over the exterior of the roof. The large window panes with optimised net wind deflector provide the best possible light/visibility and a more generous sense of space from all the seats.

The sliding glass sunroof increases draught-free air circulation in the interior and counteracts the tendency of the windows to mist up in unfavourable weather conditions. With the wind deflector, driving at a high speed with an open roof causes neither excessive noise nor draughts. Thanks to a newly developed function, the automatic opening and closing can take it to the position which was selected last.

The sliding sunroof is operated by the multifunction switch in the overhead control panel. When the multifunction switch in the overhead control panel is moved beyond a pressure point in the appropriate direction and released, the sliding sunroof automatically moves to the relevant final position (e.g. tilting, opening, closing).

When locking the vehicle with the remote control or when using KEYLESS GO with the door lock elements, the tilting/sliding sunroof can be closed by pressing and holding the locking button. If the button is released, the closing procedure stops.The "summer opening" function can be activated via the electronic key, which also activates the seat ventilation feature of the climatised seat (if this feature is present) on the driver's side.

In conjunction with the rain sensor continuously variable control of the wiper speed is extended to include the function "automatic closing of the sliding sunroof when raining".With the onset of rain or in extreme temperatures, the sliding sunroof is automatically moved to the tilt position.

The box is permanently integrated in the boot and can be folded together at the touch of a button.

The EASY-PACK Quickfold rear seat backrests make possible an individual extension of the load capacity by folding down the backrests.

The rear seat is split 1/3 : 2/3, and each backrest section can be folded down separately.Thus, folding down the seat cushions and backrests provides an individual extension of the loading capacity. It is not necessary to remove the head restraints before folding down the backrests. The backrests are released via release handles accessed from the luggage compartment. The load-securing rings in the boot are particularly suitable for transporting items when the rear bench seat backrest is folded down.

The rear seats with integral child seats provide appropriate protection for children. The integrated child seats are incorporated into the seat cushions at the right and left of the rear seat unit. A hinge mechanism allows the seats to be pivoted upwards and locked into place.

Children aged four to twelve years may be secured with the standard three-point seat belts, while children aged two to four years must be additionally secured with a special padded play table.This play table, and therefore the child, is also secured by means of the standard seat belt.

The garage door opener integrated in the rear-view mirror makes it possible to operate the garage door and other receiver units directly from the car without requiring a separate remote control. It is programmed using the hand unit of an existing garage door opener system. After this the garage door opening system can be controlled via the control panel.

The THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control system allows the driver and front passenger to adapt the climate in their respective seats to suit their individual requirements – independently of each other. The system keeps the temperature at the desired level automatically, even in strong sunlight.

To this end, sensors register the temperature inside and outside the vehicle, controlling the heating, cooling and fan for each temperature zone individually, according to requirements.

The multifunction steering wheel features a steering wheel heating system that heats it to 35 ºC, gearshift paddles to manually operate the transmission's gears and 12 function buttons for operating the display menus in the instrument cluster, and for controlling the radio volume.

The steering wheel heating is switched on with a rotary switch behind the steering wheel. A heat mat inside the multifunction steering wheel heats up the steering wheel rim to a temperature of 37 ºC, and then goes into control mode. The temperature then oscillates between 34 ºC and 38 ºC. If the steering wheel heating is no longer needed, it can be actively switched off.

The electric rear seat heating allows these seats to be heated to the desired level at one of several settings. The rocker switch or pushbutton control for each seat can be set to normal or rapid heating.

In the rapid heating setting, the system automatically changes to "normal" mode after approx. 5 minutes. The seat heating is automatically switched off completely after around 30 minutes. It can be also be switched off earlier than this manually. Seat heating is also switched off automatically if the battery charge is too low.

The climatised seats improve ride comfort on longer trips and reduce perspiration thanks to a pleasant air flow and selectable seat heating. Fans integrated in the seat upholstery uniformly distribute a flow of air in three intensity levels under the leather backrest and cushion covers.

The air flows through the fine perforation and quickly cools down the surface of the seats to a pleasant temperature – even if the vehicle has been heated by intense sunlight for a longer period of time. On cold days you can turn on the three-level adjustable seat heating, which guarantees together with the air flow that wet clothes dry faster.

The ski bag holds up to 4 pairs of skis and can be accessed from the boot. This way the skis are not soiled during the journey by being transported on the roof, and due to the absence of a roof carrier system the vehicle’s aerodynamic profile is not impaired, which means there is no increase of fuel consumption.

The ski bag allows unproblematic loading and unloading of the sports equipment, and affects neither the seat position of the front seats nor that of the outer rear seats. With the help of the retaining strap or retaining bracket the ski bag is secured in the footwell.

The auxiliary heater provides pleasant temperatures and clear windows even before the journey begins – and on frosty days. The heater has an output of five kilowatts and functions independently of the engine. It can be activated with a switch in the vehicle, using remote control from a distance of up to 300 metres or via a timer function.
